The Great Book — Lambert

Introduction

The history of the Lambert lineage cannot be reduced to a single city or a single language. It belongs to that vast geography of Western European Judaism where banking families — the Rothschild, the Bischoffsheim, the Goldschmidt, the Hirsch — wove, from the Rhine to the Thames by way of Amsterdam, Paris and Brussels, a network of credit, alliance and solidarity that accompanied the civil emancipation of Jews in the nineteenth century. As the historiography of Jewish modernity reminds us, the entry of Jews into modern finance was at once an economic fact and a fact of emancipation, high banking often serving as a vector of integration and, simultaneously, as a seat of communal loyalty [Barnavi, 1992].

The house that would bear the name Lambert was born in Brussels in the 1830s, at the very moment when the young Kingdom of Belgium was establishing its first financial institutions. The Banque Lambert was a major Belgian bank, controlled by a family whose roots go back to 1835. From this modest founding to Banque Bruxelles Lambert (BBL), a major player in twentieth-century Belgo-European finance, the lineage crosses the great upheavals of history — industrial revolutions, world wars, persecutions, reconstruction — without ever completely breaking with the memory of Israel from which it sprang. This book follows this thread, from the Rhenish counter of the Bischoffsheim to the family mausoleum of the Dieweg, by attaching itself to what facts, and facts alone, allow us to affirm.
