The Great Book — Giuli
Introduction
There are lineages whose name alone seems to say everything; others, more discreet, surrender their secret only to those willing to read between the lines of registers, censuses, and learned catalogues. The Giuli lineage belongs to this second kind. No celebrated rabbinical dynasty halos it, no great Renaissance banker bears its coat of arms; and yet its name appears where the memory of Jewish families of the peninsula is preserved, in the foundational inventory that Samuele Schaerf drew up in 1925 under the title I cognomi degli ebrei d'Italia.
This simple fact is enough to open a book. For behind a name entered in the catalogue of Jewish surnames of Italy stands a history spanning two millennia, that of a community which was the most anciently established in Western Europe, present in Rome and the Mezzogiorno from Roman times. The Giuli lineage is not an accident: it is a fragment of this continuity, a drop of water in which is reflected the entire river of the italkim, those Jews of Italy who were neither quite Sephardic nor Ashkenazi, but heirs to their own rite, the italiano or nusaḥ Italqi, older than the two others.
This Great Book does not claim to reconstruct a continuous genealogy where the archives are silent. It chooses another honesty: to say what is known, to distinguish what is supposed, and to place the few certain traces of the Giuli family within the vast documented fabric of Italian Jewish history. It is in this interweaving of the fate of a name and the collective memory of Israel that the significance of these pages resides.
