Introduction

Peu de patronymes juifs portent, aussi discrètement qu'Ely, la mémoire d'un des plus anciens noms d'Israël. Bref, presque nu, ce nom se prononce comme un souffle — Éli — et se rattache, selon la lecture la plus vraisemblable, à la racine hébraïque ʿElî (עֵלִי), « élévation », « hauteur », que la tradition associe aussi à ʿElyôn, « le Très-Haut ». Ce Grand Livre ne prétend pas reconstituer un arbre généalogique continu là où les archives se taisent ; il propose plutôt une histoire honnête du nom : ce que l'onomastique établit, ce que la tradition transmet, et ce que l'histoire juive collective éclaire. À chaque étape, nous distinguerons le documenté du probable, et nous laisserons les silences être des silences.

Le plan de ce livre suit la matière disponible : faute d'un corpus d'actes nominatifs propres à la lignée, nous partons des faits historiques les mieux documentés — la communauté, la ville, le rite, les institutions — pour approcher au plus près ce que vécurent les porteurs de ce nom. L'onomastique, réelle et signifiante, trouvera sa place en chemin, mais elle ne monopolise pas l'ouverture : c'est la vie des mellahs, les routes de l'exil séfarade et les structures de solidarité communautaire qui donnent au nom sa chair.
