Né à Chemnitz dans une famille juive d'Europe de l'Est, formé à Prague auprès d'Alois Hába (dès 1937), ami de Viktor Ullmann. Il archiva les chants synagogaux de Prague et composa plusieurs œuvres d'inspiration juive. Mort de tuberculose à Theresienstadt en 1944.
