Vitsebsk (Vitebsk)

Vitsebsk (Vitebsk) is a city in northern Belarus, on the Western Dvina, whose Jewish community is attested from the 16th century onward and reached tens of thousands by the early 20th century. The city is the birthplace of painter Marc Chagall (1887–1985), who spent his childhood and formative years there, and whose work reflects the universe of the Belarusian Jewish shtetl. In October 1941, occupying German forces massacred nearly the entire remaining Jewish population.
