ה-Sefer HaBahir נחשב לטקסט הקדום ביותר של ה-Kabbalah שהגיע אלינו, תוך קדימה על הZohar במאה שנה. הוא מיוחס לפסידו-אפיגרפית לתנא Rabbi Nehounia ben HaKana, אך למעשה חובר או הורכב בסביבת קבליסטים של Provence ו-Catalonia במאה ה-12. היצירה מציגה לראשונה את תורת ה-sefirot כאמנציות אלוהיות ואת הרעיון של ההגלגול נשמות (guilgoul). השפעתה על התפתחות מאוחרת של המיסטיקה היהודית — במיוחד על קבליסטים של Gérone ואחר כך על ה-Zohar — הייתה קובעת.

The Sefer HaBahir is considered the oldest extant Kabbalistic text, predating the Zohar by a century. It introduces for the first time the doctrine of the sefirot as divine emanations and the notion of transmigration of souls (gilgul).
