The Mekhilta de-Rabbi Ishmael is the oldest halakhic midrash on the Book of Exodus, attributed to the hermeneutic school of Rabbi Ishmael ben Elisha. It comments on Exodus 12–35, alternating legal exegesis (halakha) and narrative interpretation (aggada), and is particularly valued for its theology of redemption.
