❧ Description
First volume of the Maḥzor of Oran, a five-volume liturgical compilation assembled in Oran in the 17th century within the circle of the Cansino family — Jewish interpreters and intermediaries tolerated by the Spanish authorities in the enclave of Oran since 1509. The volume contains the annual liturgy, following a minhag combining Sephardic heritage and Maghrebi customs. After the expulsion of the Jews of Oran (1669, decree of Maria Anna of Austria in the name of Charles II), the manuscript followed the Cansino family to Livorno, where it continued to be copied and annotated (changes of paper, ink, hand). Acquired around 1834 by Samuel David Luzzatto in Padua, sold to the Bodleian in 1869. In the Neubauer 1886 catalogue, this volume corresponds to “vol. i of No. 1089.”
