Daughter-in-law of Judah (Genesis 38), she obtained justice by cunning when Judah refused to give her his son in levirate marriage. Judah acknowledged: "She is more righteous than I." An ancestor of the royal lineage of David, she stands among the women who shaped the history of Israel.
