The only reigning queen of Judea (76-67 BCE), she presided over a golden age of peace and prosperity. An ally of the Pharisees, she fostered the rise of the rabbinic academies. The Talmud (Taanit 23a) evokes her reign as a blessed time when the rains fell abundantly.
