Last of the Amoraim (masters of the Talmud), he completed the writing of the Babylonian Talmud begun by Rav Ashi. The Talmud (Bava Metzia 86a) declares: "Rav Ashi and Ravina — the end of instruction" (sof horaah), closing the Talmudic era.
