Fondée à New York en 1881 pour aider les immigrants juifs d'Europe de l'Est fuyant les persécutions antisémites ; le sigle HIAS devient le nom officiel après la fusion de 1909 (Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society). C'est aujourd'hui une organisation humanitaire juive aidant réfugiés et déplacés de toutes origines.
