Adam
First man according to Genesis (Bereshit 1-5), created on the sixth day in the image of God and placed in the Garden of Eden. Jewish tradition fixes his creation in year 1 of the Hebrew calendar, approximately 3760 BCE — a date which, by a striking coincidence, roughly coincides with the emergence of Mesopotamian proto-cities (Eridu, Uruk, Susa) and with the invention of bullae and calculi. First namer (gives names to the animals), first transgressor, first bereaved (by the murder of Abel by Cain). Lives 930 years according to Genesis 5,5. An absolutely foundational figure: his memory opens every biblical genealogy and every account of the People of the Book.
