Ternopil (Tarnopol in Polish), an important city in eastern Galicia, harbored a Jewish community since the 16th century, which reached several thousand members in the 19th century. A commercial and intellectual center, the city had Jewish schools, newspapers, and cultural organizations. During the Shoah, the community was almost entirely annihilated between 1941 and 1943.
