Regensburg (Ratisbon), an ancient imperial city of Bavaria on the Danube, was home to one of the most important medieval Jewish communities in Germany, attested from the 9th century onward. The community produced celebrated rabbis and scholars, including Rabbi Yehuda he-Hassid (12th–13th c.). It was expelled in 1519 and its synagogue razed to build the Chapel of Saint Mary.
