Kodungallur (formerly Cranganore or Shingly), a port in Kerala, is held by Jewish tradition to be the cradle of Jewish presence in India, with settlements dating back, according to some sources, to Antiquity. The famous copper plates (probably 10th–11th century) granted by King Bhaskara Ravi Varman to Joseph Rabban attest to commercial and civic privileges conceded to the community. The destruction of the city by the Portuguese in the 16th century led to the dispersal of its Jews toward Cochin and other localities in Kerala.
