Berdychiv (Berdichev), a city in central Ukraine, was one of the most important centers of Ukrainian Judaism. Associated with Rabbi Levi Yitzhak of Berdichev, a beloved figure of Hassidism, the city was majority Jewish in the nineteenth century. It was home to an intense commercial, literary, and cultural life. The community was largely massacred in 1941.
