Principal union of "centrist" Orthodox synagogues in the United Kingdom, created by an Act of Parliament on 14 July 1870, merging five major London congregations. Europe's largest synagogal body, it has more than 36,000 members and recognizes the spiritual authority of the Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom.
