History register · custodian, not owner
This museum is devoted to the history of the Jewish community of Suriname, one of the oldest in the Americas, established in the seventeenth century by Sephardic refugees from Brazil and Europe. The site includes the ruins of the synagogue of Jodensavanne (1685) in the Surinamese jungle and a permanent collection in Paramaribo. Liturgical objects, notarial records, and testimonies on the legal autonomy granted to the Jews by the Dutch form the heart of the collections.
This Great Book does not yet have published chapters. The chapters — each bearing its register, its epistemic status and its sources — will be added as editorial enrichment and assisted generation progress.
