History register · custodian, not owner
The archives of the Joint Distribution Committee, founded in 1914, form one of the most important collections for the study of modern Jewish history: more than 5 kilometers of textual documents, 100,000 photographs, 1,100 oral recordings, and 2,500 videos. The New York site holds the central administration files (up to 1975) and the Jerusalem site holds the records of field offices in Europe, Africa, and Asia. They document humanitarian aid provided to Jewish communities around the world, from the two World Wars to emigration to Israel. Access is open to researchers by appointment and through the digital portal.
This Great Book does not yet have published chapters. The chapters — each bearing its register, its epistemic status and its sources — will be added as editorial enrichment and assisted generation progress.
