Israel's principal symphony orchestra, founded in 1936 under the name Palestine Symphony Orchestra by violinist Bronisław Huberman, who thereby saved many Jewish musicians expelled from European orchestras. Its inaugural concert in Tel-Aviv on 26 December 1936 was conducted by Arturo Toscanini. It took its current name in 1948.
