History register · custodian, not owner
Discovered in 2003 by the American military in the basement of Saddam Hussein's intelligence service headquarters, this archive comprises 2,700 books and tens of thousands of documents belonging to the Jewish community of Iraq, spanning five centuries of history. The collection — written in Hebrew, Arabic, Judeo-Arabic, and English — includes sixteenth-century talmudic commentaries, communal records, and personal correspondence. Restored by NARA at a cost of three million dollars, it is fully digitized and accessible online. Its legal status remains contested, with Iraq and associations of Iraqi Jews each claiming its restitution.
This Great Book does not yet have published chapters. The chapters — each bearing its register, its epistemic status and its sources — will be added as editorial enrichment and assisted generation progress.
