Founded in Vilna in 1925 and established in Buenos Aires from 1928, the IWO is the direct heir of the interwar Yiddish studies movement, following the destruction of the Vilna headquarters by the Nazis. It holds more than 400 documentary collections on the history and culture of Jews in Argentina and Latin America, an extensive archived Jewish community press, a heritage library, and a museum. Recognized as a cultural heritage institution of the city of Buenos Aires in 2009, the IWO is developing an active digitization program for its collections. It constitutes an indispensable reference center for Yiddish studies outside Israel and the United States.
This Great Book does not yet have published chapters. The chapters — each bearing its register, its epistemic status and its sources — will be added as editorial enrichment and assisted generation progress.
