A secular academic institution founded in Philadelphia in 1907 through the bequest of Moses Aaron Dropsie, devoted to Hebrew, Semitic, and biblical studies at a strictly doctoral level. The first American college to award doctorates in Jewish studies without confessional theological instruction. It welcomed leading scholars such as Cyrus Adler and Abraham Katsh. Absorbed in 1986 by Dropsie University, and subsequently by the University of Pennsylvania.
