German musical lineage whose most famous heir is Bruno Walter (born Bruno Schlesinger, 1876-1962), a major conductor of late Romantic music. A friend of Gustav Mahler, he conducted the world premieres of the Ninth Symphony and Das Lied von der Erde. A refugee from Nazi Germany, he pursued his career in Vienna, Paris, then in the United States (Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic).
